#3 Jaws - Steven Speilberg made Peter Benchley's novel into the "father of summer blockbuster movies" in 1975. He also made sharks seem more dangerous than mayonnaise which still isn't true to this day.
#2 The Godfather - Francis Ford Copolla adapted Mario Puzo's novel into one of the greatest movies in the history of cinema giving the men of the world enough quotables to last a lifetime. I still don't completely the whole horse head in the bed thing and what happened to Al Pacino's face over the next 20 years?

#1 Gone With The Wind - Scarlet O'Hara may not have give a damn, but Margaret Mitchell's book won the Pulitzer in 1937 and Gone With The Wind also took home the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1939. Basically that means the book and the movie must've been pretty good according to somebody.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was not the first film to sweep the Oscars for Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay. That honor belongs to 1934's "It Happened One Night". "One Flew..." was the second such film, and "Silence of the Lambs" was the third.

Fight Club should have easily made this list. The book and movie are amazing.

A Clockwork Orange (although the movie cut out the last chapter)
and
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - perhaps underappreciated but incredible adaptation
