Andre-Jacques Garnerin is credited with making the first successful parachute jumps from a hot-air balloon in 1797. After that the military developed parachuting technology as a way of delivering soldiers to the battlefield. These days people go parachuting to advertise energy drinks and because they've seen Point Break one too many times.
